What is an earthquake sensitive valve?

Is your home protected in the event of a major earthquake? Every building connected to gas must have an earthquake sensitive valve. This means that every person should know how the earthquake sensitive valve works. Here’s what you need to know, including how to update your home and be prepared if an earthquake knocks out your gas line.

Earthquake sensitive valves are specialized valves that connect to your building’s gas meter. In an emergency, these valves will automatically close and cut off the flow of gas to your line. There are two common types of earthquake sensitive valves:

Seismic Natural Gas Shutoff Valve: These sensors activate when they detect an earthquake of magnitude 5.1 or higher.
Excess Flow Valve: These valves activate when they sense a gas leak or pressure build-up somewhere in your gas line.
How do earthquake sensors work?

Installing these faucets is surprisingly simple! The valve is installed on your gas meter, where the meter connects to your home’s gas pipes. The two types of gas shutoff valves described here are designed to react to different things, so they both work differently.

A seismic gas shut-off valve reacts to vibration. A metal ball is installed inside your gas pipe just above the main line that the gas uses to enter your home. When the pipe begins to vibrate at a magnitude of 5.1 or greater, that metal ball will detach from the suspension ring and block the gas line. A metal ball blockage prevents gas from moving further down the line and into your home.

The excess flow shut-off valve is a more conventional valve than the seismic gas shut-off valve. The distinct difference is that the excess flow shutoff valve is designed to check for leaks or high pressure in your gas line, not seismic activity. This valve includes an overflow sensor. This sensor is placed in the internal mechanism of the valve itself. It tells the valve to close the valve when it senses that the natural gas passing by is flowing too fast, either as a result of overpressure or through a leak. This prevents further pressure build-up or further gas escape through leaks.

Which valve works best?

These two valves are separate mechanisms and each one needs to be installed separately. Both have distinct advantages and disadvantages:

A seismic valve is very good at preventing gas from escaping through leaks caused by earthquakes, but it cannot detect how these leaks are caused.
The overflow valve reacts to little more than shock sensitivity, but is best at responding to large problems. The extra flow may not always find small leaks that just cause the gas to flow a little faster than normal.

Either valve can be installed without the other in your natural gas line, but for maximum safety, Energy Partners recommends installing both.

Why are earthquake-sensitive valves important?

Strong earthquakes can instantly rupture gas pipes and lead to very dangerous gas leaks. Gas leaks are especially dangerous inside structures, where gas can become trapped and accumulate. Trapped gas is highly flammable and toxic. In addition to causing gas leaks, earthquakes often create situations where gas can easily ignite. If an earthquake causes a fire and that fire comes into contact with the gas inside your home, it can cause an explosion.

The worst damage is often caused by gas leaks after an earthquake. During the great San Francisco earthquake of 1906, fire caused 90 percent of the damage to the city. Rupture of gas lines caused 30 fires that destroyed 490 city blocks.

Earthquake valves and sensors protect your home against gas leaks and fires caused by earthquakes. When an earthquake hits near you, you may not have the time or presence of mind to worry about your home’s gas line. A safety valve gives you the peace of mind to focus on your family’s well-being without distractions. After an earthquake, readjust the valve after checking to make sure the gas lines are not damaged. If the lines are damaged, the valve ensures that gas does not enter your home until they are repaired.

How to install earthquake extinguishing valves

Installation of earthquake sensitive valves is simple and easy to install in your existing plumbing. First, they temporarily cut off the gas supply to your home. This is necessary because the supply pipes are opened to connect the valve to them. Next, the supply pipes to your house will be disconnected from the gas meter. Depending on how your system works, sections of the pipe may be rotated or removed. This will cause the earthquake-sensitive valve device to be placed between the supply pipes and your meter.

Once spaced, the tap is attached directly to the bottom of your supply box. The valve housing itself is either like a small box or like a cylinder. It usually has a different color to make it easier to distinguish from the rest of the tube. Finally, they connect the valve to the pipes of the house. Once the valve is fully attached, they test it to make sure it works. They will also show you how to reset it.

The earthquake-sensitive gas shut-off valve is designed to automatically cut off the gas flow when an earthquake occurs. Earthquake-sensitive gas shut-off valve, when an earthquake occurs, when the amount of ground shaking reaches a warning level, it is affected by the ground shaking and automatically cuts off the gas flow in the pipeline and prevents the occurrence of more heinous incidents such as the explosion of gas pipes. It prevents gas leakage after an earthquake. The earthquake-sensitive valve will not be able to reconnect the gas flow automatically after the gas is cut off, and after the danger is removed, the gas shut-off valve must be adjusted manually by authorized experts to allow the gas flow to pass.

The earthquake-sensitive gas shut-off valve is designed and produced in a way that all its parts are durable and strong enough to withstand environmental factors such as sunlight, humidity, freezing, and temperature changes that may occur during use. If it happens, it is resistant. The earthquake-sensitive shut-off valve is one of the important equipments that should be used in all centers. Because the gas explosion caused by the earthquake may cause much more severe damage than the earthquake.
