Rim seal fire detection and extinguishing systems are developed to provide rapid fire extinguishing measures, which are used to detect and suppress fire events when they occur at the rim of floating roof storage tanks, in the early stages before a fire event develops. Global studies show that the causes of fires in floating roof storage tanks can be due to the lack of an adequate detection system to set up a fixed suppression system. RAFP systems should not be considered as a fire suppression system for the protection of high floating roof systems due to limited autonomy. This system works completely pneumatically-mechanically and does not require external electricity for its operation. The detection system consists of a certified pneumatic tube held under pressure that bursts at a predetermined temperature and shuts off the extinguishing system through a special balancing valve. The extinguishing system consists of a pressurized tank containing a premixed foam solution, which is kept under nitrogen or compressed air pressure thanks to a special balancing valve located at the top of the system. This special valve uses the standby pressure of the pneumatic detection system to keep the system ready for critical operation. When the pneumatic detection system detects a fire event, the pressure drop changes the balance of the system valve and the extinguishing agent is released from the fixed stainless steel tubes and nozzles located in the edge area. Each RAFP system protects a running 40m of the edge area of the storage tank. The system is equipped with ATEX certified pressure transmitters to monitor system readiness simultaneously.

This tube is a linear cable sensor that is stretched all around the roof of the tank, which is sensitive to a certain temperature, and in case of fire and temperature increase, the notification and extinguishing operation is done automatically.
It should be noted that due to the placement of fire extinguishers on the roof (the closest place to the fire), the shortest possible time for foam discharge is on the fire place. It is obvious that other foam fire extinguishing systems are located outside the tank, which takes a while for the foam to reach the ceiling from the location of the fire extinguishing package and perform fire extinguishing operations. It is problematic.
